Marlene Varga, MSc, BSc, Rn, CACE, IIWCC

Marlene Varga is a Wound Care Consultant and Educator. She is a published author and a member of numerous affiliations and health care organizations. She enjoys delivering evidence-based presentations and has completed research in the area of wound care practices and management. Being a strong health advocate she focuses on placing energies to bring people together to develop a community of practice to lead, promote and influence wound prevention, treatment and public policy for all citizens within Alberta. Ms. Varga is the instrumental founder and chief officer of Skin and Wound Alberta Group organization, a Speciality Practice Group of the College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta.

Catherine Finlayson, B.Ed, C.C.P.E.
Catherine Finlayson is a multifaceted professional with extensive work experience in medical and pharmaceutical sales, clinical relations, education programming and marketing. She is working with Exciton Technologies Inc. as the product relations and educator managing the development and delivering of evidence-based product-focused deliverables focusing on Edmonton’s own researched and manufactured silver antimicrobial technology and wound care products. Ms. Finlayson’s experience in working with many multi-disciplinary teams within the corporate bodies of medical companies, health foundations, education and health care institutions and their professionals has given her the insight to the power of authentic teamwork with a common goal to be ethical, fair and transparent to move towards the common health care goal.

About Ron:
Ron Matheson, B.Sc., M.Sc., has over 30 years of experience in the pharmaceutical, medical device, diagnostic, and life sciences industries; initially in executive management roles within multi-national companies (Mallinckrodt and Schering AG), and then in several start-up companies (SynChem Research, Meros Polymers, and OncoMetabolics) as Co-Founder and CEO. He has significant experience in intellectual property management and licensing negotiatin and agreements, as Business Unit Manager, Medical and Life Sciences, at UTI Inc. (University of Calgary) and as Executive-in-Residence at TEC Edmonton (University of Alberta). Fund-raising for start-up companies from public and private sources has also been a significant activity over the past 14 years. Ron is currently an Advisor, Concierge Service, NRC-IRAP, providing guidance and recommendations to innovative SMEs in the Prairie Region (AB, SK & MB). Who: Patrick SteffesPatrick Steffes
About Patrick Fonebone Services Inc.
Pat received his B.Sc. in chemistry in 1993.  After a brief stint crushing empty bottles in a warehouse, he worked in an environmental lab, Dionex Canada, Hewlett-Packard Canada, and Agilent Technologies.  He started his own instrument service business Platinum Chromatograpy Inc, which he eventually merged into K'(Prime) Technologies Inc., under President Kham Lin.  He retired in 2014 from K'(Prime) Technologies as the Vice President, Operations where he looked after the service group.  He has over 20 years of experience with laboratory instrumentation qualification, installation, repair, maintenance and training on GC, GC/MS, LC, LC/MS, CE, IC and other laboratory instrumentation.   Currently Pat does consulting through Fonebone Services Inc. (www.Fonebone.ca) , and hopes to be a blacksmith when he grows up.

About Terry Terry has been working in the life sciences industry for over 16 years.  He started his career in Contract Manufacturing Organizations and most recently as a consultant to the industry. Over his career, Terry has been involved in the most critical areas of the contract life sciences industry including:  Quality, Process Development, GMP Operations, Validation, Project Management and Business Development. Presently, Mr. Cochrane is the Managing Director of Bio-Processing Alliance (BPAI), where his team assists innovative companies in all aspects of Chemistry, Manufacturing and Controls (CMC) for biologics.  BPAI works with clients from the initial stages of creating a scope for a project all the way to actively managing manufacturing programs.

Topic: From Drug Discovery to the Medicine Cabinet: Why Does it Take So Long?
Who: Derrick FreitagDerrick Freitag
About Derrick

Heads Up Pre-Clinical
Derrick received his Ph.D. from the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences in 1994 where he specialized in drug metabolism.  Following his Ph.D., he worked as a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the University of Calgary.  In 1996, he joined an Edmonton based pharmaceutical company, Isotechnika, which focused on the discovery and development of immunomodulating therapeutics.  He started as an analytical chemist developing high performance liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry methods in support of drug development.  From there, he held a number of senior positions within the company that focused on drug metabolism, analytical chemistry, toxicology and drug development.  In 2007, he was appointed Chief Scientific Officer where he was responsible for ensuring that scientific resources were optimally deployed to support the Company’s drug development programs.  Currently, Derrick is working as a consultant for Heads Up Pre-Clinical, a company that provides expertise on how to move a drug discovery from the test tube to the first test in humans.

About AnitaA dynamic business woman since 1994, Anita has been involved in the herbal botanical industry for 18 years (culinary to medicinal).  She was involved in the functional foods product development when the area was just a concept in North America. As an experienced professional grower with a focus in natural health product development, she has received several awards of recognition for her work and involvement in the industry. Anita has been an industry representative/advisory for a blend of government groups including Alberta Agriculture and Economic Business Development and the Peace Value Added Food & Ag Association.
